Reflectivity and Emissivity Testing Program

Momentum Technologies, inc. has taken great steps to become the premier testing laboratory for your reflection and emissivity needs. MTi can provide one-stop services to answer the demands of Energy Star, CRRC (Cool Roof Rating Council) and the City of Chicago.

In brief, the CRRC is a relatively new organization with the goal of promoting the use of thermal and solar reflective roofing products. Their intention is to create a system where roofing products will be independently tested to establish both a reflectivity number, as well as, an emissivity number. The CRRC also has very specific requirements on quantity and type of samples to be provided. The CRRC requires that three (3) production line samples be examined for reflectivity and emissivity, while for custom colors three (3) samples be taken from the single batch and analyzed. The CRRC also requires that the laboratory be ISO 17025, laboratory personnel attend the CRRC short course, and the laboratory utilize the proper equipment. MTi satisfies all of these requirements.

The Energy Star Program, sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency, has somewhat different requirements. They require that one (1) original sample be analyzed for reflectance. However, the Energy Star protocol requires that the roof be re-examined for reflectance after at least three (3) years of exposure. One of the exposed roofs must be from major metropolitan area. The roofs chosen may be cleaned prior to examination. The selected roofs are to be divided into ten equal areas and reflectance values are to be taken in triplicate in the center of these areas. Energy Star requires a minimum initial reflectance of 0.65 for low slope roofs and 0.25 for steep slope roof systems. After at least three (3) years of exposure, a minimum reflectance of 0.50 is required for low slope roofing while a value of 0.15 is required for steep slopes.

The requirements of the City of Chicago are somewhat open. They require initial reflectance results of 0.65 for low slope roofs and 0.15 initial reflectance for steep slopes. They then require a three (3) year aged reflectance of 0.5 for low slope and maintenance of 0.15 for aged steep slope roofs. Finally, the standard requires that a minimum emissivity of 0.90 be achieved. MTi is working closely with the RCMA to address some of the discrepancies in this standard.

MTi is an active member of both the RCMA (Roof Coating Manufacturers Association) and the CRRC. Through our continued involvement and contributions, MTi stays up-to-date on critical information. This allows us to provide the exact services for your specific needs.

MTi now offers a package program to provide all the testing and documentation necessary to achieve the Energy Star, CRRC, and City of Chicago certifications for one low price.
